No, fanfiction isn't art. It's taking what someone else has created. But, just like learning artists copy the work of the masters, learning writers can use fanfiction to slowly get an idea of how to write for themselves. It's sort of like a set of training wheels, and once you have the motions right, you take the training wheels off and figure out how to keep the balance for yourself. But fanfiction just isn't the same experience as managing to ride the bike on your own.

No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist - Oscar Wilde
It is scary, sometimes. I dunno. I know that for me it's dying out a little bit. I'm less serious about my fandoms, and although I'm fond of them, I'm not obsessing the way I used to. (Yes, I believe it's good that I'm not obsessing as much any more, which, in itself is probably a sign of my being less preoccupied with it.)
A lot of my fan-talk is a way to keep in contact with the friends I've made through the internet. It's a common interest I know we share, so it's an easy conversation topic.
There are people who are more fanatic than I am, I know that. When an obsession starts preventing people from living life properly, that's waay too far. I don't think I've ever reached that stage.

Haha, good. Yeah, I just feel that I need to point out to people that fanfiction is similar to other online pursuits other people have thought are over the top (blogging, video-blogging, fan-art or whatever): there are some people who ruin it for everyone, sure, but those who know how to deal with their medium can usually temper the material into something worth being looked at.
Okay, I'm going to stop trying to prove this point now.

I was also depressed about this - I'm sick of being woefully sick all the time. But I promised Chris we'd do something ASAP anyway, so hopefully that makes up for my absence - I love hanging with you two. Makes me laugh till I die.

It just makes me a little sick inside to see people obsessing over something so fanatically.

Grawpbridge is canon, btw.
